HârnList is an automatic Hârn mailing list. All messages sent to the HârnList are sent to all subscribers of the list. To subscribe to HârnList, send e-mail to LISTSERV@MITVMA.MIT.EDU with "subscribe HARN-L <name>" in the body. The list server will extract your e-mail address and add you to the list automatically.
This FAQ discuses information related to the RPG world of Harn, and the Harn mailing list (HARN-L), also known as the HarnList. The HarnList is automatically maintained by a listserv:
listserv@MITVMA.MIT.EDU
Mail to the HarnList itself should be sent to:
harn-l@MITVMA.MIT.EDU For more information about using and manipulating listserv, contact your local computer support, or send a help request to the listserv; directions on using the listserv appear in its own section below.
Comments, suggestions, and contributions to this article are welcome and should be mailed to the list administrator:
harn-l-request@MITVMA.MIT.EDU This article contains the following sections:
1) WHAT IS HARN? WHAT IS HARNWORLD? WHAT IS HARNMASTER?
HarnWorld is an environment and setting for a Fantasy RolePlaying Game, authored by Robin Crossby and published by Columbia Games. The name of the world is actually Kethira; Harn is only an island on that world. The proper spelling of Harn has a carat (^) over the 'a'; in LaTeX it would be spelled H\^arn.
HarnMaster is a RolePlaying Game system developed specifically for Harn. However, the Harn setting can be used with almost any existing Fantasy RPG system. Harn is designed as a low fantasy world, in that politics, intrigue, and human interactions play a much more common role in character's lives than do dragons, huge treasure hoards, and great magic, though these exist as well.
More information about Harn and HarnMaster can be found on the HarnPage, described in the following section.
2) WHAT IS THE HARNPAGE?
The HarnPage is a Web site dedicated to Harn and HarnMaster. Columbia Games has designated it as the Official home page for Harn. The URL is:
http://www.vuw.ac.nz/~jamie/harn/HarnPage.html
The HarnPage is also mirrored at the following two sites:
http://jumi.lut.fi/Harn/HarnPage.html http://www.westfalen.de/harn/HarnPage.html The HarnPage includes pointers to a more detailed FAQ about Harn and HarnMaster, pointers to other Harn sites, and an archive of the HarnList. It also includes many resources and ideas produced by fans of HarnWorld, such as rules supplements, maps, and useful software. There is also some material from Robin Crossby himself, the author of Harn.
3) WHAT IS THE HARNLIST (HARN-L)?
HARN-L, also known as the HarnList, is an electronic forum for discussion about HarnWorld and HarnMaster. Subscribers of this mailing list may send email to the listserv machine addressed to HARN-L, and the listserv will in turn remail the article to all recipients subscribed to HARN-L.
In addition to the numerous fans of Harn who read the HarnList, the list of subscribers includes a representative of Columbia Games and also Robin Crossby, author of HarnWorld. While both of these people have been happy to answer questions on the list when they have the time, please do not abuse their accessibility. They are here voluntarily and have many other calls on their time.
Archives of the HarnList are available on the HarnPage (see section 2) and from the listserv (see section 7). The HarnPage archive may not be up-to-date, and the listserv archive does not include the earliest history of the HarnList, before it migrated to the listserv.
4) WHAT ARE THE RULES FOR POSTING ON HARN-L?
Subjects discussed on HARN-L are expected to relate to HarnWorld, HarnMaster, or general issues common to all roleplaying which might be interesting to the HARN-L subscribers. Some subjects have been either beaten to death already or have been declared inappropriate for the list. In particular, questions or discussion about what file formats should be used on the HarnPage should not be directed to the HarnList; such queries should either go to Jamie Norrish, who maintains the HarnPage, or to the author of a particular file.
Otherwise, posts should conform to the common standards known as "netiquette". Below are listed a few basic quidelines to follow; these are not complete, but will help to keep all HarnList readers happy:
5) HOW DO I SUBSCRIBE TO HARN-L?
Since anything mailed to HARN-L itself will be automatically mailed to all list subscribers, subscription requests should be mailed to the listserv, and NOT to the mailing list. The address of the listserv is:
listserv@MITVMA.MIT.EDU
The subject header of the request is immaterial and you may stick in any subject line that you wish. The body of the message should contain just this line:
SUBSCRIBE harn-l YourName
Thus, for instance, if Robin Crossby wished to subscribe, he would send to listserv@MITVMA.MIT.EDU an email message that simply read:
SUBSCRIBE harn-l Robin Crossby
The listserv software is rather finicky, be sure to supply at least a first name and a last name. As with anything you mail to a listserv, do not include any signatures or extraneous text in your message; these may confuse the listserv.
6) HOW DO I UNSUBSCRIBE FROM HARN-L?
Just like subscribing to HARN-L, unsubscription requests should be mailed to the listserv, and not to the list itself. To unsubscribe, send mail to:
listserv@MITVMA.MIT.EDU
The subject header of the request is immaterial, and you may stick in any subject line that appeals to you. The body of the message should contain just this line:
SIGNOFF harn-l
Unlike subscribing, your name is not required in this case. Do not include signatures or extraneous text in your message. If you have difficulty unsubscribing, see section 8 for help.
7) WHAT OTHER THINGS CAN I DO WITH THE LISTSERV?
Besides subscribing and unsubscribing from mailing lists, there are other requests that you can send to the listserv. These request commands should be addressed to:
listserv@MITVMA.MIT.EDU
The body of the message would be the specific commands that you wish the listserv to perform. Each command should be on its own separate line. Commands may be uppercase or lowercase, and may be shortened to the smallest unique abbreviation. In all cases with one exception, the Subject header is irrelevant. The one exception is the HELP command. If the word HELP appears in the Subject header, it will not process the body of your message but will send you the help file instead.
Some common commands to get you started are:
HELP
Gets help from the listserv
INFO Gets a list of information guides available
REV harn-l
Gets a list of the subscribers to the HARN-L mailing list
INDEX harn-l
Gets a listing of mailing list archives for HARN-L
GET harn-l LOG9503 Gets the HARN-L archive LOG9503 (use INDEX to get the list of available logs)
8) WHAT IF I HAVE DIFFICULTY UNSUBSCRIBING FROM HARN-L?
If you have difficulty unsubscribing from HARN-L, first check whether you are sending the command to the right address and have sent the right command. Section 6 has the details.
If the command and mailing address are correct and you still have problems, check the From: keyword in the mail you sent to the listserv with the signoff command. Compare your own address as listed in the From: keyword against the the mailing address listed for you in the HARN-L listserv database. You can find out what address the listserv database has for you by sending the REV HARN-L command to the listserv, as described in section 7. If the address in the From: keyword in your mail does not match the address as listed in the listserv database, the listserv will not be able to unsubscribe you.
This situation can be caused by several things. If you have multiple accounts, only the account which is listed in the database will be able to successfully send the signoff command. Apparent mailing addresses might also change if the machine hostname changes, the mail server machine changes, or if the mail configuration files are modified.
There are two ways to fix this problem. First, if you can manage to send mail with the appropriate From: address in the header (such as by logging into the correct account), you can then send the correct command to the listserv. If this is not possible, you should notify the HARN-L administrator, who can perform the unsubscription for you. You can reach the HARN-L administrator by sending mail to:
harn-l-request@MITVMA.MIT.EDU
9) WHAT ABOUT OTHER KINDS OF PROBLEMS WITH HARN-L?
Many problems with the listserv can be solved by reading the HELP document and other listserv documentation available from the listserv, as described in section 7. If you have a problem that cannot be solved with those documents or if you have a question or problem with the HarnList itself or it's contents, feel free to send a message to the HARN-L administrator at:
