Hoard

Wyverns do not hoard treasure. However, they do tend to return to their lair to eat their kills. For this reason, it is not uncommon to find some form of treasure within a lair. However, the main problem is finding the lair. If the GM wishes, he can roll on the Wilderness Encounter Table to determine the dead in the lair. There would not be a good chance of finding any weapons other than daggers.

Type of Wyvern Encountered

The type of Wyvern encountered will depend upon the location of the encounter. The chart below lists only Hârn, Lythia, Midgaad and Other. Roll under the heading that is most appropriate for the encounter.

Description

The Wyverns are described here from a Hârnic point of view. All Wyverns are solitary creatures by nature, except during the mating season (late spring through early summer). At that time, two to four females (the most common sex of Wyvern) will vie for the attention of a single male. This is often done by bringing the bull tribute, normally in the form of food. The type of food is meat, normally being an animal or gargun, but human flesh is not uncommon. The bull will choose from the tribute and mate with the winning female (after she has driven off her rivals). The female will lay from two to four eggs. The young will take two years to mature.

Wyverns tend to live in areas with a strong thermal air lift. This may be mountains or coastal cliff areas. Lairs are normally caves.

Hârnic Wyvern

This most commonly seen Wyvern seen on the Isle of Hârn. It's main weapon for hunting are its mace-like tail and its large clawed feet. Its bite is used to kill difficult prey and to eat its catch.

Lythian Wyvern

The most common Wyvern seen on Kethira. This type hunts by using its venemous tail sting. The poison of the Wyvern will cause paralysis in the victim if he fails his H2 Healing Rate roll. With a MS on the Saving Throw, the victim takes 3d6 fatigue, 1d6 if the result was a CS. The venom will wear off in 2 hours if the victim survives the encounter. The sting may only be used 4d6 times in one 24 hour period.

Great Wyvern

This type of Wyvern is rarely seen. It differs from the Lythian Wyvern only in fact that its venom is weaker (H3) and that is has a Fire Breath that it uses to hunt with. The Fire Breath may be used only once a minute, and no more than 2d6 times in a 24 hour period.

Attacking

Wyverns may attack only one opponent during a Combat Round. However, he may attack that opponent twice during that round. The Wyvern may use each of its weapons only once in any Combat Round.
