Carlotta was taken to a tavern across from the Dedergon gate, cleaned up, and put to work in the kitchen. As Carlotta grew older, the owner of the tavern, Tarek of Parda, began to realize that the inexpensive kitchen helper was turning out to be very attractive. Tarek decided that Carlotta would be taught the art of pleasure and begin providing additional services for Tarek's customers and additional profits for himself.
Her life in the kitchen had not been pleasant, and Carlotta had begun to dream of meeting a man who would buy her freedom and take her away to a life of luxury. When Tarek told Carlotta of his plans for her to be another of the products available in his establishment, she gave up her foolish notions, realizing that she would have to win her freedom by herself.
Carlotta learned her trade well and attracted faithful customers. One night, one of her current regulars named Valas made her a proposition: if she would work with him by signaling which of her customers were strangers in town with money, then he would rob them and give her a share of the take. Carlotta agreed, and the arrangement lasted several months.
Carlotta did not realize it at the time, but Valas was a vampire. He used his relationship with Carlotta to insure that his victims were people who would not be missed. After all, what was one more unknown body found floating in the canals of Golotha?
After several months of a successful partnership, Valas began to fear discovery and decided it was time to move on. Unwilling to lose a valued ally, Valas told Carlotta what he was and asked her to join him. After initial disbelief, Carlotta realized that Valas spoke the truth. Here was her chance not only to be free, but to become powerful beyond her wildest dreams. That night Carlotta left the inn with Valas and never returned.
Valas and Carlotta worked together for many years. They were very careful about choosing their victims, and they did not stay in an area long enough for the cause of the increased death rate to be determined. Eventually Valas and Carlotta went their separate ways. Valas had decided to go into the wilderness for a time and live off the superstitions and blood of the barbarians, while Carlotta saw no reason to discontinue a practice that had been successful for the last ninety six years.
Carlotta currently resides in the city of Tashal in the Kingdom of Kaldor. She works as a prostitute at the inexpensive inns. No one knows much about her except that she never arrives before sunset and is always gone by sunrise. Additionally, she prefers newcomers to the regular customers. Carlotta has become aware of the underground activities of the Lia-Kavair and the churches of Naveh and Ilvir. She is trying to determine how this may be used to her advantage.
Additionally, if the PCs check around they can learn that there has been an increase of dead bodies lately. The city watch believes this to be an increase in robberies, as none of the victims had any money left on them. Careful investigation by the PCs may reveal a relationship between the increase in deaths and the appearance of a new prostitute.
If the PCs refuse to become involved, the GM could have Carlotta mistake a PC for a lone traveller and attack him. If the PCs still refuse to become involved, Carlotta will eventually head to another city to begin again, and the PCs might get (should get) another chance to do something about her in later travels.
If the PCs talk to Carlotta, she will tell them that after she concluded her transaction with Yarl, he had said he was going to The Spurs, an inn infamous for the bad element it attracts. This information could put the PCs into conflict with the Lia-Kavair in Tashal, which is just what Carlotta wants. If the PCs allow it, she will guide them into conflict with the Lia-Kavair and use any opportunity to pick them off one by one.
If the PCs notice Carlotta's nocturnal life-style and draw the correct conclusion, Carlotta will respond to the actions of the PCs. If the PCs try to hunt her by themselves and she learns of their activities, then she will attempt to divide and conquer. If The PCs alert the authorities, then she will try to kill as many of the PCs as she can before leaving the city.
