H’rnic Book List

This is a list of books and other texts that can be found in Northwest Lythia. Note that books are very rare, and some of these are unique. The contents of this list is definitely not common knowledge.

An immensely obscure and hard to understand book, the text consists of both prose and verse, in several languages and scripts. During his lifetime the author visited many Earthmaster sites, even spending years at some locations. He apparently wrote the original manuscript during such stays, for it occasionally reads like a diary. Some believe that during his final years, spent at a Peonian temple, he wrote a second work on the subject, but if so no one has admitted to seeing it. What is more likely is that he revised the original manuscript, thus creating in effect two texts. If this is the case, both of these were probably copied, creating different textual traditions. The confusion about a second manuscript may well have arisen due to differences when two texts from the different traditions (both seemingly the same work) were compared. No one has undertaken an adequate study of the differences between the two texts.

Exactly what the title says, this large work contains an alphabetical listing of the important words used in the writings and sayings of Genin. Not only are the relevant passages containing each word given, but the author has also added her own scholarship by including a guide to the meaning or possible interpretation of difficult phrases and passages. The nuances of the individual words are explained in their contexts by the author, who spent many years simply tracking down copies of rare pieces by the founder of the Shek-Pvar.

Gives information on the constellations, major and minor, and in particular on the zodiac. It also includes some discussion on the other Kelestian worlds. This is a basic reference work for astrologers, and its descriptions contain numerous references to stories attached to particular planets, stars and constellations. The author probably drew on numerous secondary sources, some of which were less reliable than others; the author doesn't seem to have made any judgement between what he himself observed and what he heard about the practices in far-off lands.

This work is the standard introduction to the subject in most of the civilised states of Harn and western Lythia. It is popular not because of any interest in pure mathematics, but rather because of the importance of some maths in determining important calenary dates (festivals, solstice, etc). Few books take the subject any further - aside from its astrological uses, mathematics is simply not something central to the Harnic outlook and worldview.

This text is a short manual which explains how to teach boys [children] faith and good morals. While it has some applicability to children of all backgrounds, it is intended primarily for those of a middle class or noble heritage. There is a definite bias towards Laranism. The traeatise includes chapters on: what ought to be taught; teaching through discipline, by example, and by word; teaching by the parents; the teaching of faith and morals; the teaching of honour; the teaching of knowledge; and the text ends with two sermons to boys [children].
