Kaldyn of Rhynis, NPC

Though to most outward appearances Kaldyn seems nothing more than a normal man, the true nature of his origins (known to a very select few) makes him one of the rarest creatures in all of Harn. Born on the 6th of Azura (600TR) in Ulfshaven, Kaldyn is the unlikely product of a Sindarin (father) and Human (mother) union. Kaldyn's father is Kalaerin the Shipwright and his mother was a Jarin woman named, Ahlana Joyle¹ (now deceased). It is said that in her time Ahlana was more beautiful that any other maiden (Human or Sindarin) found in all of Evael, and that Kalaerin was so taken by her beauty that he even risked losing his place in the Valpalen² to win her love and marry her. The union was, of course, frowned upon by many in both the Sindarin ann Jarin communities, but over time much was forgiven and many hard hearts were softened by Ahlana's beauty and grace. Kaldyn was raised in a loving home and provided with fine education and training. Unfortunately, the fire of his human half burned brightly in his veins, and as he grew into young adulthood³ Kaldyn became more and more impulsive and impatient, spending much of his time carousing (4) with the various traders and sailors who visited Ulfshaven's port. Eventually, unable to suppress his increasing "wonderlust," Kaldyn chose (against his father's express wishes) to sign-on with one of the many foreign trading vessels leaving Ulfshaven for the world beyond.

Kaldyn's adventures and travels are far too numerous to list here, suffice it to say that during his time among men (and the lowest sort of men at that) he learned a great number of singularly "un-Sindarin" skills and abilities (i.e. how to cut purses, pick locks, survive a dirty fight, etc.). Although essentially good-hearted, Kaldyn has (in his search to understand his human heritage) often allowed others to lead him into a variety of unwholesome activities. Needless to say, he has developed a very conflicted and confusing image of himself; one in which he wishes to accept his human heritage, but finds that doing so means that he must often act in ways quite contrary to his Sindarin nature. In the time that he has been "among" humans, Kaldyn has become very jaded and pessimistic about life (5). Only lately has he begun to wonder whether or not he should return to Evael and try to re-establish some of his familial ties there. Unfortunately, the primary obstacle that prevents him from doing so is his (growing) sense of shame for the life he has lead since leaving there.

Through a bizarre turn of events, Kaldyn finds himself accompanying a group of adventurerers quite unlike any he has ever travelled with before, and finds that many of his previous beliefs about the inherent selfishness of "human" nature may not, in fact, be true. At this point, however, this is a thought on the very margins of his awareness, and may or may not develop sufficient to "see the light of day." Oddly, the origins of this budding awareness are in Kaldyn's own actions, in that, though prisoner to the Uruk bounty hunter, Ishnaak Toobah (see above), and presented with an opportunity for escape, he chose rather to save the Uruk's life (6). Additionally, he has begun to strike up an awkward friendship with the dwarf, Gurzakh (see above). And, although he has yet to reveal his background completely to the dwarf, he realizes (and dreads) that sooner or later the dwarf's persistent suspicions will lead to some sort of disclosure.

Notes

1 -- Clan Joyle has owned and operated one of the most popular inns in Ulfshaven, The Homeward Sail, for almost six generations now. It is currently maintained by one of Kaldyn's distant cousins, Landamar Joyle.

2 -- The Valpalen is King Aranath's advisory council. It is composed of thirteen members (including the king himself), selected from Evael's most prominent Sindarin families.

3 -- During which time he watched sadly as his beautiful young mother grew old and died.

4 -- Ostensibly, he was only supposed to be "visiting" with his relatives at the Homeward Sail.

5 -- Particularly reflective of Kaldyn's conflicted Human/Sindarin nature is the fact that, though often pessimistic and cynical, he displays a disconcertingly eager curiosity about situations and people and a deep sensitivity to beauty.

6 -- An act whose thoroughly and completely inexplicable character continues to puzzle both Kaldyn and the Uruk as deeply as any.
