Rhaikan, NPC

Born on the 3rd of Larane (698TR) in the village of Utera, Orbaal, Rhaikan is the youngest son of the village smith and weaponcrafter (Thurimar of Lynael). Both he and his elder brother (Jasic) are active in the Jarin underground movement, although they do so against the express wishes of their father. For, Thurimar firmly feels that sometimes the things of life should just be accepted, and is perfectly content to receive monies for his work from the hands of both Ivinian and Jarin customers ("After all, business is business"). It is not only somewhat distressing to Thurimar that his sons choose to associate themselves with so dangerous an organization, but it also perplexing. "How did my boys become so obstinate as to fight fate? Why so much useless effort expended against the Ivinians? Things change. Life goes on. We Jarin have always managed to adapt. Anyway, there is work to do and money to be made."

Jasic (5 years Rhaikan's elder -- and the only other child) is the inspiration and mentor of Rhaikan. Rhaikan has developed a level of devotion to his brother as strong as any bond imaginable. It is this bond to Jasic that initially got Rhaikan involved with the Jarin underground movement. Jasic watched throughout his youth as the Jarin were treated as second class citizens by their Ivinian overlords. The subjugation of the Jarin was a knot in Jasic's stomach which grew more uncomfortable as he watched his own father "turn on" his Jarin roots and sell arms to the Ivinians. In Jasic's mind Jarin had been killed vicariously by his own father's hand with every blade sold to an Ivinian warrior. Jasic swore an oath then that there would be no such blood on his hands, and left the home of his father in order to devote his energies full time to the underground resistance movement. He, and subsequently Rhaikan, had come to feel that the only chance to atone for the sins of his own father would be to work toward the overthrow of the Ivinian invaders. Jasic's stories of fame, freedom, and personal glory intrigued Rhaikan, and filled him with a desire to make a name for himself. After Rhaikan also joined the movement, he quickly realized the wisdom of Jasic's solution and became a true and dedicated servant of the Jarin underground.

Rhaikan is an aggressive and impatient fighter. He is formally trained as a Man-at-Arms and is a fairly strong and skillful fighter. His skills, of course, have to be strong to compensate for his general lack of planning or forethought. In Rhaikan's view, waiting to prepare a plan often causes important windows of opportunity to permanently disappear. Rhaikan's style is mostly characterized by his quickness to action and impetuousness. A failure to act in a pressing situation, for whatever reason, will often result in his launching a one man attack. Patience is not a virtue highly valued by Rhaikan, although he has of late begun to develop some appreciation for it -- particularly in and through his relationship with Illian (see below). And, although he does not always agree with the decisions which Illian makes, he nonetheless has grown to respect the other's good judgement and trust in his skill. In fact, Rhaikan has recently found himself frequently comparing his relationship with Illian to that which he has with his elder brother, Jasic.
