Texas Glory Tournament

GM:    Carl Willner

Assistant GMs: To be determined

Date:    August 6, 2009 (date subject to confirmation by WBC)

Place:    Lancaster, PA

REMEMBER THE ALAMO!

Welcome to the first WBC Texas Glory Tournament! As one of the Texas Glory designers, I look forward to hosting this event and hope that you enjoy it. We will be using the most current version of the rules issued by Columbia (at present 1.01, but a version 1.02 with some clarifications may be issued by the time of the tournament).   The rules are available online from the Columbia web site, www.columbiagames.com.

The tournament will be run on a Single Elimination basis.   The number of rounds is estimated at 4, running continuously on Thursday with 3 hours maximum for each game starting at 9 am, and with one-hour breaks between rounds; if more players sign up, an additional round may be added carrying the finals over to Friday morning.   It should be possible in this fast-moving game to finish in the alloted time, but if a game is not finished at the end of 3 hours and players cannot agree who would win if the game were played to its conclusion, the GM will adjudicate based on win probability, taking into account positions and strength of blocks on the map, and cards remaining in each player's hand.   If ties need to be resolved for advancement to the next round (for example, due to an uneven number of players available to advance) they will be decided based on awarding a point for each turn earlier than the normal scenario end that the winning attacking player (Texan in 1835, Mexican in 1836) reached his victory goals (that is, reduced the defender below the minimum number of towns he needed to hold to win), or how many more victory towns than the minimum required to win that the defending player (Mexican in 1835, Texan in 1836) held at the end of the game.   An immediate Texan victory from elimination of Santa Anna in 1836 trumps all other types of wins.

Since Texas Glory has two scenarios, 1835 and 1836, the players in each game will have the option of playing either scenario; if they do not agree, 1836    (Santa Anna's invasion of Texas) is the default scenario.   Players will bid verbally for the choice of sides, if both prefer to play the same side.   Players in 1836 will bid for the Mexicans by reducing the number of victory towns the Texan needs to hold to win below the normal minimum of 4, and in 1835 will bid for the Texans by reducing the number of victory towns the Mexican needs to hold below the normal minimum of 4.

Pairings of players will be done randomly for each round, but if neither player has a game set players may be switched by the GM to the extent possible (players should plan to bring sets for the game). Any rules disputes will be adjudicated by the GM.

A demo is planned for evening of Wednesday, August 5 at 8PM and players who are new to the game can participate in the tournament if they watch the demo game.
