Victory Map 8 Strategy Notes
Strategy notes assume the "A" is placed in the lower left corner.

Victory Map

Two peninsulas and an island bearing resources sit amidst the Misty Sea.  Several reefs provide small roadblocks and could channel naval operations in previously unconsidered directions.

Attack
Similar to Map 7, a straightforward attack from the North will likely focus on the single city of Tanana.  Protected only by a thin strip of forest, an attacker should have no problem approaching this city from several directions.  He can further enhance his attack by attempting a blockade to limit naval units and reinforcements.  Once this is accomplished, however, it will be an uphill battle to take the fight across the Misty Sea.  An attacker must choose whether to make an attempt on the distant small resource producing island with the city of Komak, or attack the closer, larger island.

From the South, a player is faced with the same choice.  Regardless of the direction, there are several crucial factors to consider when planning this attack.  First, the reefs of Walrus Shoal and Saltchuk Reef provide a crucial bottleneck off of the small island that can block quick access of reinforcements from the larger islands.  A skillful attack will include forces placed here to limit the ability of the defender to maintain his supply route to Komak.  One factor to consider, however, is that the energy expended to capture Komak might be larger than the expected payoff, unless resource production is a crucial part of the scenario.  It might be more effective to attack the larger island, or if from the south, the relatively unprotected island of Raven.  This will give the attacker a good base of operations from which to continue his attacks.

Defense
Taking advantage of the terrain opportunities before the attacker does should be of primary concern.  Situate your naval units in key spots to make enemy blocking actions difficult.  If playing with the logistics units, it would be very wise to construct an airfield on the island of Komak.  This will give you the equivalent of one or two aircraft carriers in the middle of the Misty Sea – a tremendous advantage.  In addition, if facing an attack from the North, placing some naval units in the Humpback Pass near the city of Yakut could limit the attacker’s reinforcements significantly.
